Mr. HORE-BELISHAasked the President of the Board of Education whether the Government propose to take steps by legislation to set up a statutory commission to give effect to the Report of the Departmental Committee on London University, which would favour the abolishing of the external degrees of that university?
§ Lord E. PERCYThe Government have introduced a Bill in another place to set up a Statutory Commission to give effect to the recommendations of the Departmental Committee. But if the hon. Member will look at paragraph 8 of the Committee's Report he will see that it is explicitly stated Butt none of their recommendations is in any way designed to restrict the present facilities available for external students, or to prevent their development. This statement corresponds with the views of the Government, and it will be the duty of the Statutory Commission under the Bill to carry out the Committee's intentions in this matter.
