HC Deb 07 July 1926 vol 197 c2053
12. Mr. BARKER

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs the number of British subjects who are resident in China; the number residing in the treaty ports; and the number residing outside the treaty ports?

Sir A. CHAMBERLAIN

The latest available statistics show that in 1924 the total number of British subjects in China was 14,701. No exact figures are available showing the proportion resident within the treaty ports, but it is estimated that this comprises more than one-half of the total.
