HC Deb 18 February 1926 vol 191 cc2112-3
59. Mr. JENKINS

asked the President of the Board of Education whether he is aware of the dissatisfaction which exists throughout the principality, particularly among head teachers of secondary schools, with the present method of awarding State scholarships; and will he state his reasons why the method applicable to England is not applied to Wales?

Duchess of ATHOLL

My right hon. Friend is aware of the difficulty, which arises from the fact that, unlike the approved examining bodies in England, the Central Welsh Board, which is the approved examining body for the majority of the schools in Wales, is not a University body, and consequently it has been necessary to ask the University of Wales to hold a special examination for the award of State scholarships. In order to avoid the duplication of examinations necessitated by this arrangement, he has recently invited the Central Welsh Board and the University of Wales to consider the possibility of making joint arrangements for the examination, and discussions are now proceeding between them.
