HC Deb 08 December 1926 vol 200 cc2110-1
65. Mr. BOOTHBY

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he is aware that, owing to the failure of the south fishing, great distress at present prevails among the fishing communities on the coast of Scotland; and whether, in view of the fact that fishermen and fish-workers are in many cases ineligible for benefits under the National Health Insurance Act and the Unemployment Insurance Acts, he will cause an inquiry to be made into possible methods of rendering some assistance to the herring fishing industry?

Sir J. GILMOUR

I understand that the financial results of the East Anglian fishing have been unsatisfactory to the fishermen largely owing to the high cost of coal. I am obtaining fuller particulars as to the situation through the Fishery Board for Scotland.
