§ 79. Mr. RYEasked the Minister of Transport whether, in view of the danger to pedestrians caused by the adoption of one-way traffic in London, he will consider the advisability of abandoning the trials and reverting to the old traffic system?
§ Lieut.-Colonel MOORE-BRABAZONI am aware that there is a fairly widespread impression that one-way streets in- 2632 crease the danger to pedestrians, though the figures of accidents, which are available, tend to show that the risks have diminished rather than increased. My right hon. Friend the Minister has already asked the London Traffic Advisory Committee to advise him whether any steps can usefully be taken further to minimise the risk of accidents, to pedestrians, either by altering the position of the refuges or increasing their number.
§ Mr. RYEIs the hon. and gallant Gentleman aware that the contrary view is held by prominent members of highway authorities, and that, in particular, at a meeting of the Westminster City Council, on Thursday last, it was thought that there is grave danger on the north side of Trafalgar Square, and the construction of a subway was advocated?
