HC Deb 26 April 1926 vol 194 cc1646-7
33. Mr. HURD

asked the Minister of Agriculture if he can state the decision of the Government regarding the proposal to establish in this country an industry for the production of power alcohol from sugar beet?

Mr. GUINNESS

I regret that I am not yet in a position to announce the Government's decision on this subject.

Mr. HURD

May I ask when the right hon. Gentleman will be in a position to answer?

Mr. GUINNESS

I have received a very technical report from a scientific committee, and am considering it. I hope it will be possible to announce a decision very shortly.

Viscountess ASTOR

I hope the Government will be very careful to do nothing to increase the production of alcohol.

Mr. GUINNESS

The Noble Lady is perhaps not aware that this is not for human consumption, but for motor power.
