HC Deb 22 April 1926 vol 194 c1359
12. Sir FRANK MEYER

asked the Home Secretary whether he is aware that motor cars standing in authorised parking places in the Metropolitan area are compelled by police regulations to keep their side and tail lights burning after lighting-up time; and whether he is prepared to modify this regulation, which is wasteful and not required for public safety?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

I have no power to waive the requirement, which is not a police regulation, but a provision of the law relating to motor vehicles in streets.

Captain BRASS

Is the right hon. Baronet aware that this practice is in force in Paris at the present time?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

My hon. and gallant Friend must realise that it is not a matter of regulation here, but a matter of law, and would need a change in an Act of Parliament.

Captain BRASS

Will the right hon. Baronet consider that?

Sir W, JOYNSON-HICKS

I have only to carry out the regulations. My right hon. Friend the Minister of Transport will have to deal with the question of an alteration in the law.
