HC Deb 23 November 1925 vol 188 cc897-8
35. Mr. J. S. ALLEN

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware of the growing importance of the tobacco crop in Nyasaland; whether he is aware that the development of that country is held up for want of a bridge over the Zambesi river; and what steps the Government proposes to take to enable this country to develop the tobacco industry as an imperial asset?

Mr. AMERY

The improvement of the communications of the Nyasaland Protectorate with the outside world, a question fully discussed in the report of the East Africa Commission, is engaging the attention of the Government. In the meantime provision has been made for the appointment of an expert tobacco inspector, a step strongly recommended by the unofficial members of the Legislative Council.
