HC Deb 18 November 1925 vol 188 cc366-7
32. Mr. H. WILLIAMS

asked the Minister of Labour the number of persons insured against unemployment on the date of the last count and the corresponding figure for the previous count?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

The number of persons in Great Britain insured under the Unemployment Insurance Acts at July, 1925, including approximately 126,000 insured tinder special schemes for the banking and insurance industries, is estimated at 11,626,000, as compared with 11,406,000 in July, 1924.

Mr. WILLIAMS

Am I therefore correct in assuming that, roughly speaking, there are now 200,000 more people at work than there were a year ago?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

I think that is approximately true.

35. Mr. SHORT

asked the Minister of Labour the total number of unemployed men, women, boys, and girls, respectively, for the week ending 14th November, 1925, and for the corresponding date in 1924?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

I am circulating a table of these figures in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

The following is the table referred to:

Number of Persons Registered at Employment Exchanges in Great Britain.
9th November, 1925. 10th November, 1924.
Men 963,277 930,801
Boys 34,614 34,484
Women 171,732 222,653
Girls 28,454 30,454
Total 1,198,077 1,218,392

72. Mr. SANDEMAN

asked the Minister of Labour, in view of the increase in population in Great Britain during the last year, what is the percentage of unemployment to employment as compared with the same date last year?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

The published percentage of unemployment among persons insured under the Unemployment Insurance Acts in Great Britain was 11.1 at 26th October, 1925, as compared with 11.0 at 27th October, 1924. These percentages in both cases are taken on the estimated population for the end of the previous June. Adjusted for October, 1924, the earlier percentage would be reduced from 11.0 to 10.8. A corresponding adjustment will fall due to be made for October, 1925, but the data for making it are not yet available.
