asked the Minister of Labour the number of men employed on works instituted by local authorities and others under schemes sanctioned by the Unemployment Grants Committee; the total amount of expenditure involved; and the corresponding figures for a year ago?

On the 31st October, 33,542 men were directly employed on schemes assisted by the Unemployment Grants Committee, as compared with 29,383 at a similar date last year. The estimated cost of schemes approved by the Committee from the 25th June to the 31st October this year was £10,200,000, as compared with £7,867,000 last year.
