HC Deb 17 March 1925 vol 181 cc2063-4
65. Mr. HURD

asked the Minister of Transport what is the mileage of rurai roads in the care of rural district councils; to what extent are these roads the subject of grants from the Road Fund; and how many rural district councils have received no grants from the Fund?

Colonel ASHLEY

At 31st March, 1924, the mileage of highways for the maintenance of which rural district councils were responsible was 93,938 miles, out of which 3,394 miles were subject to grants from the Road Fund as Class I or Class II roads. Out of a total of 651 rural district councils, 171 councils have not received any grants from the Fund since 1st April, 1923, either under the classification scheme because they have no Class I or Class II roads, or under the special allocation for the improvement of important roads in rural areas.
