HC Deb 12 March 1925 vol 181 c1518
97. Mr. HAYES

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the number of firms who purchased surplus war stores from the Disposal Board and who have not yet settled their accounts; the amount due to the Government under these contracts; the reasons advanced by the contractors For their non-compliance with the terms of payment; and what steps he is taking to secure payment?

Mr. GUINNESS

The number of firms or individuals who have not yet settled is 51, including some cases overseas. The amount involved is approximately £1,000,000. As regards the third part of the question, the reasons put forward for non-payment are various and include legal questions, fall in markets, disputes as to quality of goods, insolvency, etc. Legal steps are being taken in all cases to secure payment.

Mr. HAYES

Can the right hon. Gentleman say what firms have entered counter-actions against the Government, and what sums are involved?

Mr. GUINNESS

I should like notice of that question.
