HC Deb 11 March 1925 vol 181 cc1312-3
30. Lord HENRY CAVENDISH-BENTINCK

asked the Minister of Labour whether the Government proposes to introduce an Eight-Hour Day Bill this Session for the purpose of ratifying the International Labour Convention; and, if so, can he indicate an approximate date?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

I cannot add anything at present to the answer given on this subject to the hon. Member for Elland (Mr. Robinson) on the 10th of February.

Mr. T. JOHNSTON

Is the right hon. Gentleman not aware of the great benefit that would accrue to this country as a result of a general acceptance of the Convention?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

I am afraid I cannot say "Yes" to that question, because it needs much more detailed examination, and the Matter in that ease can really only be elucidated in the course of a debate in the House.

Mr. T. WILLIAMS

Is the right hon. Gentleman not aware that, if such a Bill were passed, it would dispense with a good cleat of the safeguarding of industries that is in contemplation?

Mr. SPEAKER

That is a matter for debate.
