§ 41. Sir ALFRED BUTTasked the Home Secretary whether, in view of the recent remarks of the Lord Chief Justice on the cruelty of prison-gate arrests, he will take steps to ensure that this practice is not continued or revived?
§ Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKSI have made inquiry and find that the incident to which the Lord Chief Justice was referring occurred in the year 1920 and that the circumstances were of a quite exceptional character. I am satisfied 631 that the police do their utmost to avoid the necessity of re-arresting a man upon his discharge from prison.
