§ Colonel LANE-FOXI regret that I have no statistics that would enable me to state how many workers at the face or day-wagemen were employed in the coal mining industry in 1913 or are employed now. It has been roughly estimated that these classes form respectively about 33 per cent, and about 60 per cent. of the total number of wage-earners, which is at present about 1,140,000.
