HC Deb 29 June 1925 vol 185 cc2007-8
57. Captain WEDGWOOD

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what are the obligations of the British Government for the protection of the Tangier zone; and whether any request has been received that British troops should be sent to protect the frontier?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

His Majesty's Government are parties to the Tangier Convention. By Article three, the Tangier zone is placed under a regime of permanent neutrality, and by Article four, the surveillance of contraband traffic in arms and munitions of war in the territorial waters of the Tangier zone is to be exercised jointly by British, Spanish, and French naval forces.

I have this morning received a communication from the Spanish Government upon the subject, which I have not yet had time to consider, and I shall be obliged if the hon. and gallant Member will defer further questions.
