HC Deb 29 June 1925 vol 185 cc1984-5
6. Mr. HANNON

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether he can state the total amount of raw silk produced in India during the past 12 months; and the total amounts exported with countries of destination?

Earl WINTERTON

As the reply to this question contains a number of figures and a tabular statement I propose, with my hon. Friend's permission, to circulate it with the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Following is the answer:

I regret that I have no information as regards the first part of the question; the total amounts of raw silk exported by sea from British India during the 12 months ending 31st March last, with countries of destination, so far as available, are shown in the following table:

Raw (reeled) silk: lbs.
To United Kingdom 57,115
To France 51,010
To Other countries 42,831
Total 150,956
Chasam (waste) and cocoons 1,495,470
Total raw silk 1,646,426

The last period for which more detailed statistics showing the destinations of exports of raw silk are available is the fiscal year ending 31st March, 1924, in respect of which the figures are as follows:
