HC Deb 24 June 1925 vol 185 cc1504-5
21. Mr. PONSONBY

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the seaport of Akaba, in the Hejaz, has been abandoned by King Hussein; and into whose hands it has now fallen?

Mr. AMERY

I have been asked to reply to this question. His Majesty's Government have never regarded the town of Akaba as falling within the limits of the Hejaz, nor has its occupation by the Hejaz ever had their formal consent. Ex-king Hussein, who retired thither from Jeddah after his abdication, has now left it at the request of His Majesty's Government, and has transferred his residence to Cyprus. The Government of Trans-Jordan is taking steps to assert its authority over Akaba.

Captain WEDGWOOD BENN

Was Trans-Jordania to be delimited under the mandate?

Mr. AMERY

No. I will later answer a question of the hon. and gallant Member on that subject.
