HC Deb 27 July 1925 vol 187 cc2-3
1. Colonel DAY

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether his attention has been called to the appeal made by Mr. Ghandi to the Government of India on the occasion of the death of Mr. C. R. Das, in which he expressed the hope that political prisoners would be released as a tribute to the memory of Mr. Das and to placate Indian opinion and to ensure the inauguration of a favourable atmosphere: and whether the Government proposes to take any action in the matter?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for INDIA (Earl Winterton)

My Noble Friend is always glad to consider suggestions for allaying animosities in India, but this suggestion does not seem to be practicable.

Colonel DAY

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that there is no better time than the present, and no better chance of showing our good faith than by the release of these prisoners?
