HC Deb 23 July 1925 vol 186 c2390
30. Mr. HAYES

asked the Home Secretary whether the inquiry into the circumstances of the arrest and detention of Major Sheppard will be held in public or private; whether the parties will be allowed legal aid; and whether the evidence will be taken on oath?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

The inquiry will be in public and the parties will, I understand, be represented by counsel. Notice has been given of Resolutions under the Tribunals of Inquiry (Evidence) Act,. 1921, and if they are passed by both Houses, the Tribunal will be empowered to take evidence on oath.

Mr. ERSKINE

Will Major Sheppard be put to any personal expense in the matter?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

That I cannot say. Major Sheppard made a charge against the police and of course it is for him to prove it.

Mr. HAYES

Has legal advice been supplied to the police by the authorities?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

Yes.
