HC Deb 22 July 1925 vol 186 c2188
31. Colonel DAY

asked the Minister of Labour whether he will give the number of persons in receipt of unemployment benefit in the borough of Southwark on the last convenient date; and if the Unemployment Grants Committee has under consideration any proposals for the employment of men and women in the autumn and winter of this year?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of LABOUR (Mr. Betterton)

The number of persons with claims to benefit current on 13th July at the Walworth Road Employment Exchange was 7,171. I am informed that local authorities in the Borough of Southwark have submitted to the Unemployment Grant? Committee for approval schemes of work estimated to cost £17,500, for operation during the autumn and winter months.

Colonel DAY

Is the hon. Member aware that extended benefit has been refused to many of these people, especially to Ormond Arthur Passey, who was unable to obtain extended benefit, or relief from the guardians, and who committed suicide?

Mr. BETTERTON

The hon. And gallant Member raised that question last-week, and I asked him to give me particulars or to put down a Question, and he has done neither.

Colonel DAY

The hon. Member says that I have not put down a Question. I put down a Question on the same day, and it has been on the Order Paper ever since. Perhaps he will look it up
