HC Deb 15 July 1925 vol 186 cc1283-4
70. Mr. THURTLE

asked the President of the Board of Trade if, in connection with the inquiry now proceeding in connection with the heavy steel industry, evidence will be heard from the steel rollers, who use this steel as raw material for their industry?

Sir B. CHADWICK

I would refer the hon. Member to the answers given by the President of the Board of Trade to the hon. Member for West Middlesbrough (Mr. T. Thomson) on 7th July, a copy of which I am sending him.

Mr. MONTAGUE

Is it the fact that the representatives of the Iron and Steel Trades Confederation made a statement yesterday, and why should not the re-rollers be heard?

Sir B. CHADWICK

I do not know of any such statement to the Cabinet Committee as is indicated by the hon. Member, and if I did I could not say anything about it.

46. Major CRAWFURD for

asked the Prime Minister whether the speech of the Home Secretary at Dudley on 8th July, in which he advocated a protective duty upon iron and steel, represents the considered view of the Government?

The PRIME MINISTER

I have seen a report of my right hon. Friend's speech, and cannot accept the interpretation of the hon. and gallant Member, move especially as the Home Secretary specifically stated in the course of his speech that he must not be taken as indicating that the Conservative Government was going to put a protective tariff on iron and steel or anything else that comes into this country.
