HC Deb 13 July 1925 vol 186 c834
2. Mr. W. BAKER

asked the Undersecretary of State for India what were the circumstances which necessitated the appointment as private secretary to the Secretary of State of a gentleman not already on the staff at the India Office; and whether he will state the salary paid to this officer before and after his transfer?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for INDIA (Earl Winterton)

It was considered that, having regard to the volume if work, justification existed for a special additional appointment of assistant private secretary to the Secretary of State for India. The salary paid to the gentleman appointed to this office- is at the rate of £5000 per annum, plus Civil Service cost of living bonus. He was receiving the same rate of salary before transfer.

Mr. BAKER

May we understand that, when this gentleman is being engaged to play for the butterflies, that the duties which are so important are being performed?
