HC Deb 09 July 1925 vol 186 cc595-6
49. Mr. GEOFFREY PETO

asked the Prime Minister whether he will take steps to prevent the excessive prices which are now being charged by owners of coal stocks in anticipation of a possible stoppage in coal production?

The SECRETARY for MINES (Colonel Lane-Fox)

I have been asked to reply. I have no evidence that excessive prices are being charged. At present I have no power to control prices.

Mr. G. PETO

Is the hon. and gallant Gentleman prepared to receive information on the subject, and, if necessary, is he prepared to apply for emergency powers to prevent excessive profits being made at the expense of the producer and the consumer?

Colonel LANE-FOX

I should be very glad to receive any information that my hon. Friend can give me. If any attempt is made to exploit the situation the Government may well consider the matter?
