HC Deb 06 July 1925 vol 186 cc28-9
65. Mr. TREVELYAN

asked the Minister of Labour how many European countries have already abolished night baking; and in how many of those countries there has been any resultant rise in the price of bread?

Mr. BETTERTON

The information available shows that legislation prohibiting night work in bakeries is in force in the following European countries-Austria, Belgium, Czechoslovak, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Soviet Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland (two cantons). This legislation does not necessarily follow the lines of the Convention recently adopted by the International Labour Conference. I am unable to state from the official records of retail prices which are available how far any rise which may have taken place in the price of tread in the respective countries is attributable to the operation of such legislation.
