HC Deb 17 December 1925 vol 189 c1600
30. Sir F. HALL

asked the Minister of pensions whether he is aware that numbers of men permanently disabled in the War are only able to get about the streets in invalid chairs; and whether, in view of the assistance that it would afford to these men to have auto-wheels fixed to the chairs, which in many cases the expense entailed renders impossible, he will consider the question of making free provision of these wheels in suitable cases?

Major TRYON

The invalid chairs supplied by the Ministry are, I am advised, of the most suitable type generally for the severe cases of disablement concerned and I regret I do not see my way to adopt my hon. and gallant Friend's suggestion.

Sir F. HALL

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that in some cases where it can be afforded the wheels have been fixed, but it is on behalf of those that cannot afford it that I am speaking?

Major TRYON

I shall be glad to consider the matter. I am aware that these wheels possess advantages and disadvantages. There are cases where it might be positively dangerous, besides causing great inconvenience in the event of a breakdown.

Sir F. HALL

But surely, great convenience is afforded those men who can afford these wheels? Will the right hon. Gentleman give the matter further consideration?

Major COHEN

Could the right hon. Gentleman say whether the British Red Cross give any grants towards these wheels?

Major TRYON

Yes, we are aware of the generosity of the Red Cross.
