HC Deb 16 December 1925 vol 189 cc1416-7
76. Mr. EVAN DAVIES

asked the Minister of Health whether he is aware that His Majesty's inspector of schools has strongly condemned the present accommodation for children attending the elementary schools at Ebbw Vale; that the local authority has submitted plans and schemes for improving such accommodation; and whether he will state the reason why he refuses the necessary sanction for this work to be proceeded with?

Sir K. WOOD

My right hon. Friend is aware of the position as regards school accommodation in the area, but, having regard to the financial circumstances of the district, he does not feel that he can properly sanction fresh capital expenditure at the present time.

Mr. BARKER

May I ask if the interests of education are to be sacrificed in this particular district?

Sir K. WOOD

As the hon. Gentleman knows, we have gone very carefully into this matter, and the circumstances are very difficult.
