HC Deb 03 August 1925 vol 187 c941
6. Mr. ROY WILSON

asked the Secretary of State for Colonial Affairs whether he is prepared to recommend that assistance from the Treasury be given in the matter of loans for railway expansion in the British West African Colonies, in view of the prospects for cotton growing, ground nuts, and other products in Northern Nigeria, which warrant new railways, and possibly the duplication of the existing single main line from Lagos to Kano?

The SECRETARY of STATE for COLONIAL AFFAIRS (Mr. Amery)

Nigeria is in a position to raise, without assistance from the Treasury, the funds that are required for railway extension in that country, and the other West African Colonies are likewise not in need of such assistance at present.

Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

Are these loans being raised on the British market?

Mr. AMERY

As and when required, they will be.
