HC Deb 03 August 1925 vol 187 c950
34. Mr. LANSBURY

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty the number of officers, seamen, boys, Royal marines, and other persons who will be discharged as a result of the saving of £150,000 as shown in the White Paper; and will he state the numbers separately of officers, seamen, boys, Royal marines, and other persons?

The FIRST LORD of the ADMIRALTY (Mr. Bridgeman)

There is no present intention of discharging any of the officers, men or boys already in the Service. Various proposals that would have the effect of reducing personnel requirements are under consideration—many of them as a result of a Committee presided over by Admiral Sir William Goodenough, K.C.B., M.V.O., which the Admiralty appointed last spring to consider this subject—but it is anticipated that the reductions can be effected by not replacing part of the ordinary wastage during the year.

Mr. LANSBURY

May I ask how it is proposed to save £150,000? Does it mean that fewer people will be employed?

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

As I said at the end of my answer, we are not replacing part of the ordinary wastage. The places of those who leave will not be filled.

Mr. LANSBURY

That means that fewer people will be employed?
