HC Deb 03 August 1925 vol 187 c943
12. Mr. H. WILLIAMS

asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs whether he has received an intimation from the New South Wales Government that it has decided to terminate the arrangement for the settlement of 200 agricultural labourers per month from Great Britain?

11. Mr. FOOT MITCHELL

asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs whether he is aware that the New South Wales Government has cancelled the existing commitments by which 200 unmarried farm labourers were to be sent from this country each month: if he will explain why this step is being taken; and if he will state whether any of the applicants who may have incurred financial liability in connection with their impending departure will be in any way compensated?

Mr. AMERY

In May last the late Government of New South Wales requested that 200 unmarried farm workers per month should be recruited in this country for that State. In compliance with this request, the Commonwealth authorities in London have provisionally accepted 132 men, and definitely booked passages for 16. This request has recently been cancelled by the new Government of New South Wales, but that Government has given instructions that all applications already under consideration shall be proceeded with.
