§ 92. Major CRAWFURDasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will consider the imposition of a duty on motor spirit in lieu of the existing system of motor taxation?
§ The MINISTER of TRANSPORT (Colonel Ashley)I have been asked to reply. As the hon. Gentleman is aware, the Departmental Committee, in a majority report, dated 27th June, 1924, 1833 were unable to recommend the imposition of a motor spirit duty. In view of their recommendation, I am not prepared at the present time to take any action in the matter.
§ Major CRAWFURDIs the right hon. Gentleman aware that if this change be made he will get a more equitable form of tax, and he will have the consent of the people who are taxed?
§ Mr. SPEAKERThat matter cannot now be debated.
