HC Deb 01 April 1925 vol 182 cc1279-80
2. Colonel WEDGWOOD

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether, when consenting to the increase in the Bulgarian armed forces, His Majesty's Government made any representation as to the use of these forces in the suppression of the Agrarians and Communists in Bulgaria?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

The question is asked under a misapprehension. His Majesty's Government has not consented to any increase in the Bulgarian armed forces beyond the limits laid down in the Treaty.

Colonel WEDGWOOD

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that in answering a question last week he told me they had authorised an increase of 10,000 in the armed force of Bulgaria?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

At any rate, my answer is correct to-day.

Colonel WEDGWOOD

May we understand that the policy of the late Government in refusing to authorise any increase has been carried out by the present Government also?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

The present Government have not authorised any increase. What exactly the policy of the late Government was I do not know. I would rather answer in respect of our own policy than by reference to theirs.
