§ 44. Mr. GILBERTasked the Home Secretary whether his attention has been drawn to an order issued by the Chief Commissioner of the City of London Police which requires married constables and officers to live within a three-mile radius of the City; whether he is aware that with the present housing shortage in London such an order is difficult to carry out, and has caused much dissatisfaction in the City Police; and can he cause this order to be withdrawn or modified?
Mr. HENDERSONI have made inquiry and am informed that members of the City of London force are expected to live within three miles of the City if this is reasonably possible; but this rule is by no means rigidly enforced, and, in view of the difficulties to which my hon. Friend refers, a large number of men have been given permission to reside, for the time being, at distances up to six miles from the City.
