HC Deb 10 March 1924 vol 170 c1915
69. Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what is the present position regarding the importation of spirits into West Africa for the use of the native population; and whether he is able to state what steps he proposes to take in order to prevent or further regulate this traffic?

Mr. THOMAS

In accordance with the International Convention on the subject, the importation of trade spirits is prohibited in West Africa, and legislation has been framed defining what other spirits are admissible. As this legislation, together with the Customs duties now in force, provides for a sufficient control over the importations, I do not propose at this stage to take further steps in the matter.

Sir A. BENN

Are any steps taken to prevent the consumption of poisonous substitutes which, it is stated, are being used in West Africa?

Mr. THOMAS

If my hon. Friend knows anything about them, and will let me have the information, I will consider the matter.
