HC Deb 10 March 1924 vol 170 c1892
12. Mr. BECKER

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he can give a date on which our troops will leave Iraq?

The SECRETARY of STATE for the COLONIES (Mr. J. H. Thomas)

No, Sir; I cannot give a date.

Mr. BECKER

Is it not the right hon. Gentleman's intention to carry out the previous Government's policy with regard to this country, to withdraw as soon as possible?

Mr. THOMAS

Certainly, to withdraw as soon as possible. The Government are considering the whole situation at the moment.

Captain WEDGWOOD BENN

Can the right hon. Gentleman say what is preventing the withdrawal of the troops? What are we waiting for?

Mr. THOMAS

There are a number of considerations.

Mr. WARDLAW-MILNE

Is not one of those considerations that of Iraq joining the League of Nations?
