HC Deb 10 March 1924 vol 170 c1890
10. Lieut.-Colonel JAMES

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether his attention has been called to the fact that attempts are being made in Darjeeling to recruit a troupe of Lama devil dancers to perform at the Wembley Exhibition; whether he is aware that devil dances have a deep religious significance to the Buddhist priests and other Buddhists in Tibet and that the proposed scheme is arousing strong feelings of religious resentment and apprehension; and whether he will take steps to see that their susceptibilities are not outraged by the engagement of this troupe?

Mr. RICHARDS

I understand as a result of inquiries here that one of the Indian concessionnaires at Wembley has made arrangements in India for the recruitment of a troupe of the description indicated, but further inquiries are being made of the Government of India, with special reference to the points raised in the question.
