HC Deb 31 July 1924 vol 176 c2228
35. Mr. GILBERT

asked the Home Secretary the number of workmen's clubs in the Metropolitan police area; whether all such clubs are registered by the police; and whether any special licensing privileges are allowed to these clubs or whether they have to conform to the same closing hours as other licensed premises?

Mr. DAVIES

Clubs where intoxicating liquor is supplied have to register in London at the police courts. The total number of such clubs registered in the Metropolitan police district is 1,554, but it is not possible to say how many of them could be described as workmen's clubs. The hours during which liquor may be supplied are, within the limits of the Licensing Act, 1921, fixed by the Club Rules, and are not necessarily the same as the permitted hours fixed by Justices for licensed premises.
