HC Deb 22 July 1924 vol 176 c1122
53. Mr. HARDIE

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that there is strong public feeling in Scotland against the proposed sale of national property at Gretna; and whether, in view of the fact that schemes for re-starting parts of the plant, on a profitable basis are awaiting his consideration, he can postpone or cancel the proposed sale at Gretna?

Mr. GRAHAM

His Majesty's Government, have decided that it is impossible to postpone or cancel the sale by auction at Gretna which is proceeding.

Mr. HARDIE

Is my hon. Friend aware that the Labour party, which he represents, stands for nationalisation, and can he explain why the Labour party now seeks to sell some of that which they wish to nationalise?

Mr. STEPHEN

May I ask the reasons why it was impossible to postpone—

Mr. SPEAKER

I do not think that can be done at Question Time.

Mr. HARDIE

Owing to the unsatisfactory answer, "I shall raise this at the very first opportunity on the Motion for the Adjournment.
