HC Deb 17 July 1924 vol 176 c571
30. Mr. BARNES

asked the President of the Board of Education whether he intends to take any action, by means of an alteration in the Code, to enforce the policy declared in Circular 1,325 of reducing the maximum size of classes from 60 to 50?

Mr. TREVELYAN

The Code, as already amended, states that the authority should consider whether it is not practicable to arrange that no class shall have more than 50 children on the register. But in reprinting the Code (which I hope to do in the autumn) I propose to introduce some further amendments, including one by which the Board will be empowered, where they are satisfied that the accommodation available is sufficient for the purpose, to reduce the figure 60 in Article 14 to 50. This, and any other new amendments, would, of course, in the first instance, be published as draft amendments.
