HC Deb 07 July 1924 vol 175 cc1749-50
28. Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what is the British expenditure on the Sudan anticipated during the present year and what was it during last year; and how much is being contributed to the cost of the Sudan administration by Egypt this year and during the last three years, respectively?

The PRIME MINISTER

No expenditure chargeable to British funds is or was incurred last year in the Sudan beyond that involved in the maintenance of one British infantry battalion and a small detachment of garrison artillery at Khartum. No contribution to the cost of the Sudan administration has been made by Egypt this year or during the last three years. It is understood, however, that the Egyptian Government, which under present arrangements keeps a considerable portion of its army stationed in the Sudan, records in its accounts a portion of its military expenditure as attributable to this disposition of its forces.

Lieut. - Commander KENWORTHY

Are these Egyptian troops answerable entirely to the British administration in Khartum?

The PRIME MINISTER

I think the whole question will come up this afternoon.
