HC Deb 03 July 1924 vol 175 c1497
44. Sir H. BRITTAIN

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that Mexico has failed to pay the half-yearly interest on the external debt due this present week; and whether any explanation has been advanced with regard to this delay?

Mr. LUNN (Secretary, Overseas Trade Department)

The reply to the first part of the hon. Member's question is in the affirmative. In reply to the second part, as my hon. Friend the Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs informed the hon. Member for West Fulham (Sir C. Cobb) on the 18th June, the failure of the Mexican Government to deposit the necessary sum for the service of the debt under the agreement reached with the International Bankers' Committee is understood to be largely due to the revolutionary movement in Mexico.
