HC Deb 21 January 1924 vol 169 cc486-7
Mr. LINFIELD

(by Private Notice) asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether any agreement has yet been reached between His Majesty's Government and the German Government representatives now visiting London with regard to the German Reparations 26 per cent. levy, and, if so, will he indicate the lines on which a settlement has been effected, and if an agreement has not been reached, is he prepared to submit at once to the House a Resolution authorising the temporary suspension of the levy now made under the German Reparation (Recovery) Act, 1921?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative, so that the second part does not arise. Negotiations are proceeding, but I am certainly not prepared to agree to a suspension of the levy.

Mr. LINFIELD

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that Irish and Dutch traders are offering British traders German goods without any payment of this duty at all?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I am not aware of that.

Mr. PRINGLE

Is the Government quite content that British subjects should continue to pay German reparations?
