HC Deb 21 January 1924 vol 169 cc525-6
59. Mr. SUNLIGHT

asked the Minister of Health if, arising out of the Bradford building collapse, he would instruct building and improvement departments of local authorities to supply and enforce printed notice boards, to be hung up in all new factories and warehouses, stating the load suspended floors must not exceed to carry to fulfil the terms of building bye-laws?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

There is at present no general statutory power enabling local authorities to do what is suggested by the hon. Member. I am, however, in consultation with the Home Office on the general question.

Mr. HARDIE

Is there any Department in any of the English towns which says what load these floors shall carry, and prevents their being overloaded?

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

So far as the Ministry of Health is concerned, there is not.

Mr. HARDIE

Then there ought to be.
