HC Deb 17 January 1924 vol 169 c256
33. Sir FREDRIC WISE

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will state the approximate average price of the purchase of dollars of the second payment of $92,000,000 by Great Britain to the United States on account of the War Debt, and the highest and lowest price given for the dollars?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

While it is not possible to identify precise purchases of dollars with particular payments, it may be taken that the approximate rate for the dollars used to meet the December instalment of the debt to the United States of America was $4.58 to the £. Further, the payment was actually made in Liberty Bonds, purchased at a discount.
