HC Deb 29 March 1923 vol 162 cc722-3
Mr. TREVELYAN

I wish to ask a question in connection with the business on Monday, when we resume. I asked yesterday whether the Special Constables Bill was going to be printed. It has not yet. been distributed, and it is not in the, Vote Office.

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

It will be in the Vote Office this afternoon at 3 o'clock, and circulated on Saturday.

Mr. TREVELYAN

Does that give us an opportunity of putting down a Motion for the rejection if we find it unsatisfactory

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

Yes, I think so.

Mr. TREVELYAN

Does the right hon. Gentleman think it is a satisfactory procedure to put down a Motion for the rejection of a Bill which we do not see on the mere chance of its being a bad one, and would not a much better plan be to put the Bill down on a subsequent day?

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

It is perfectly easy to move the rejection on the day it is discussed here.

Mr. TREVELYAN

May I ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether that is a satisfactory procedure that those who are opposed to the Bill should not be able to put down a Motion, and therefore the House should not know that the Bill is going to be opposed or should put down a Motion for rejection on the chance of wanting to oppose it?

Mr. McENTEE

May I also ask what opportunities there will be for putting down Amendments to the Bill?

Mr. BALDWIN

That will be on the Committee stage.
