HC Deb 08 March 1923 vol 161 cc689-90
13. Mr. FREDERICK ROBERTS

asked the Minister of Pensions whether orphans of the war are entitled to claim assessment of pension on the alternative pension basis; and, if not, will he state why these orphans are deprived of the advantages which would have been available to them had the mother survived?

Major TRYON

The award of alternative pension has always been limited by the Warrant to disabled men and widows. I would remind the hon. Member that special provision is made for children, who are or become motherless, by the grant of increased pension. Moreover, they are eligible for additional grants in respect of education where the circumstances are such as would have led to the award of alternative pension to the parent.

Mr. ROBERTS

Will the right hon. Gentleman consider putting into operation this suggestion?

Major TRYON

I cannot give an undertaking to do so, hut, of course, I will consider any suggestion the hon. Member may make.
