HC Deb 08 March 1923 vol 161 cc722-3
77. Sir J. REMNANT

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the approximate amount of compensation that the Government will have to pay to Messrs. Rownson, Drew, and Clydesdale, by reason of the default of the Disposal Board in carrying out their contract with this firm?

Mr. BALDWIN

I presume my hon. Friend refers to the commission payable to Messrs. Rownson, Drew, and Clydesdale under a supplemental agreement made with that company by the Disposal and Liquidation Commission on the 27th June, 1922. This amount is for assessment by the joint auditors, whose report on the matter is awaited.

Sir J. REMNANT

When the right hon. Gentleman talks about a new contract, does he not mean an extension of the original contract, under which it could be seen at once how much was due to the failure of the Disposal Board to hand over goods, which the Chancellor of the Exchequer admits and, to save a further call on the taxpayers of this country, will he, in view of this and other disastrous contracts entered into by the Disposal Board, give us a. Select Committee to look into the whole thing?
