HC Deb 08 March 1923 vol 161 c720
73. Mr. BLUNDELL

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether his attention has been directed to the proposal of the South African Government to subsidise the exportation of meat and livestock; and whether, should legislative effect be given to the proposal, countervailing import duties will be imposed in this country, in order to safeguard the interests of home producers?

The MINISTER of AGRICULTURE (Sir R. Sanders)

I have been asked to reply. I am aware from the Press that the Prime Minister of the Union has recently announced the intention of the Government to promote legislation to permit of the payment of subsidies on meat and livestock exported from the Union. The possible effect of these proposals on the British producer will be carefully considered when fuller details are available.
