HC Deb 08 March 1923 vol 161 c708
44. Mr. MARDY JONES

asked the President of the Board of Education whether he will grant a holiday to all children in all the elementary and secondary schools in Great Britain on May Day, Tuesday, 1st May, to celebrate the international solidarity of the rising generation as it will be celebrated by the school children on the Continent of Europe on that day?

Mr. WOOD

The Board do not grant holidays in elementary or secondary schools. The closure of schools on particular days is a matter within the discretion of local education authorities, governing bodies and managers of schools.

Mr. SHINWELL

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that there is a widespread demand for a holiday of this kind —a demand which is shared by the children themselves?
