HC Deb 26 July 1923 vol 167 cc697-8
60. Mr. GRAHAM WHITE

asked the President of the Board of Education if his attention has been drawn to a decision of the] Barrow Education Committee not to provide meals for necessitous school children when the family income is 38s. per week; and if proposals to impose an income test in this regard without reference to the size of the family have the approval of the Board?

Lord E. PERCY

My right hon. Friend understands that the family income limit of 38s. per week applies to a family of two parents and four children, and that the Barrow-in-Furness Local Education Authority propose to deal with each case of larger families on its merits. In reply to the latter part of the question, my right hon. Friend would not be prepared to approve of an income test which did not take into account the size of the family.
